Why Moss Grows on Vancouver Roofs
Southwest Washington’s long, wet season keeps roofs damp for months, and shaded slopes under firs and maples may not dry out at all between October and May. Moss settles into that damp grit along seams and shaded edges. Left alone, it holds moisture against the roof and can lift shingle edges over time, and the debris it sheds ends up in the gutters.
How We Clean Roof Moss
- Free on-site estimate. We look at the roof, the pitch and the moss, and give you a clear price.
- Protect the plants. We pre-wet shrubs, beds and lawn before we start.
- Soft wash the roof. A cleaning solution made for roof surfaces goes on at low pressure and kills the moss at the root.
- No rinse. We leave the solution on to keep working; the rain rinses it off over time. Heavier moss may keep loosening and washing away over the following weeks.
- Clean the gutters. Gutter cleaning is included, since moss knocked loose ends up in them. We rinse the plants again when we finish.

We soft wash asphalt shingle roofs and tile roofs (tile from a ladder when possible). We don’t clean metal roofs or cedar shake roofs. On steep roofs we work in a harness, and if a roof is too steep to work safely, we’ll tell you at the estimate.
