Trees, Shade and a Long Wet Season
Between Battle Ground Lake State Park to the northeast and the East Fork Lewis River running past Lewisville Regional Park, this is a green, wooded part of the county. That is great for the view and hard on siding. Firs block the low winter sun, drop needles into every corner and keep walls wet long after a storm passes.
The result is predictable. North walls go green first. Black mildew gathers under eaves and around porch ceilings. Moss creeps onto trim boards and the tops of fences. Houses near Main Street are often older, with painted wood and trim that needs a gentle touch. Newer subdivisions on the edges of town tend to use vinyl and fiber cement. The Soft Wash, Step by Step
- Water the landscaping. Shrubs, beds and lawn edges get soaked with clean water first.
- Apply the solution. A low-pressure spray covers siding, soffits, fascia and trim.

Signs Your Battle Ground House Is Due
Watch for a green tint on the lowest rows of siding, gray streaks running down from the gutters, dark spots on the soffits and webs collecting in porch corners. Moss on the fence tops or a shady deck usually means the walls are not far behind. Once growth is visible from the street, it has usually been building for a while. Washing at that stage keeps it from staining paint and trim.
