Downspout Flushing in Clark County: Signs Yours Is Clogged

Clean gutters only help if the water can get out. When a downspout clogs, rain backs up, spills over the gutter edge and lands right next to your foundation. Mountain View Pressure Washing And Softwash offers a full downspout flush as an add-on to gutter cleaning, so water flows all the way from your roof to the ground the way it should.

Signs Your Downspout Is Clogged

Water Spilling Over the Gutters

If your gutters overflow during a steady rain, even right after they’ve been cleaned, the downspout may be blocked.

Little or No Water Coming Out the Bottom

A downspout that only trickles during a heavy rain is usually holding back leaves and debris.

Gurgling or Standing Water

Gurgling sounds, pooling at the top of the downspout or water standing in the gutter are all common signs.

Wet Spots Near the Foundation

Water splashing out of gutters can soak the ground near your house, puddle on walkways and stain siding.

How Our Downspout Flush Works

An Add-On to Gutter Cleaning

Regular gutter cleaning clears the gutter troughs. A full downspout flush is not included in regular gutter cleaning. It’s an add-on service that may cost more, depending on how many downspouts you have and how clogged they are.

Clearing the Whole Run

We work the clog loose and flush the downspout so water runs freely from top to bottom, then check that it’s draining.

You Don’t Need to Be Home

As long as we can reach the outside of your home, you don’t need to be there. We’ll let you know when the work is done.

Gutter Cleaning Pricing

Gutter Cleaning starts at $225. The downspout flush add-on is quoted separately, and we’ll always tell you the price before we start.

Gutter & Downspout Cleaning in Vancouver, WA: What the Service Includes

When people search for gutter cleaning in Vancouver, WA, they usually want to know three things: what the crew actually does, whether the downspouts get handled too, and what a clog is costing them if they wait. This post covers all three for Mountain View Pressure Washing And Softwash.

For pricing and scheduling, see our gutter cleaning in Vancouver, WA page.

If you want to know when to schedule, we covered that in when to clean your gutters in Clark County. This one is about the service itself.

Gutters and downspouts are one system

A gutter only collects water. The downspout is what gets it off the roof and away from the house. If the gutter is clean but the downspout is plugged, water still backs up and spills over the edge.

In Vancouver, downspouts tend to clog in a few predictable places:

  • The outlet at the top. Fir needles and wet leaves collect where the gutter drains into the downspout and form a plug right at the opening.
  • The elbows. Debris that gets past the outlet often jams at the first bend, where you can’t see it from the ground.
  • The bottom or the underground line. Some homes run downspouts into buried drain pipe. Clogs there are harder to reach.

That’s why it’s worth thinking about both. Regular gutter cleaning clears the gutter outlets, and a full downspout flush is available as an add-on.

What gutter and downspout cleaning includes

Here’s what to expect when Mountain View Pressure Washing And Softwash cleans your gutters:

  1. A free estimate. We look at the house, the gutter runs, the downspouts and how much is in them, and give you a quote before any work starts.
  2. Clearing the gutter runs. Leaves, needles, moss, shingle grit and sludge come out of every run, including the corners. Depending on the house, debris is removed by hand, with a leaf blower or by vacuum.
  3. Clearing the gutter outlets. We clear debris from the outlets where the gutters drain into the downspouts. A full downspout flush is not part of regular gutter cleaning. It’s available as an add-on that may cost extra, so ask about it at your estimate.
  4. Handling the debris. What comes out of your gutters goes into your yard waste bin if you have one and there’s room. Otherwise it’s left neatly at the edge of your property. Bagging and hauling debris away aren’t included.
  5. Pointing out what we see. If gutters are loose, sagging, or there’s moss on the roof feeding them, we’ll tell you. Roof soft washing deals with the moss itself.

Want the face of the gutters cleaned too? The black streaks on the outside of gutters are a separate step. See our gutter cleaning page for the full process.

What clogged gutters and downspouts damage

Water that can’t get down the downspout has to go somewhere. In a Clark County winter, that’s a lot of water.

Fascia and roof edges

When a gutter backs up, water can spill over the back edge, behind the gutter. The fascia board stays wet, and in our damp climate wood that stays wet can start to rot.

Siding

Overflow from the front edge runs down the wall and splashes mud and grit onto siding. It also keeps the lower siding wet, which is where green film and mildew like to grow.

The foundation and crawl space

A common cause of a damp crawl space or a wet basement wall is water dumping next to the foundation from an overflowing gutter or a blocked downspout. Gutters exist to move that water away from the base of the house.

The gutters themselves

Wet needles, moss and leaves are heavy. A full gutter puts weight on the hangers and can pull the gutter away from the house over time.

Walkways and steps below

Overflow keeps the concrete underneath wet, and wet shaded concrete grows moss. We wrote about that on our walkway moss post.

Is it safe to clean gutters yourself?

Some homeowners do clean their own single-story gutters, and that’s fine if you’re comfortable on a ladder. A few general cautions:

  • Set the ladder on firm, level ground, and don’t overreach. Move the ladder instead.
  • Wet roofs, wet leaves and mossy shingles are slippery. Clark County roofs are wet much of the year.
  • Two-story homes, steep roofs and power lines nearby are where a lot of people decide to call someone.

If you’d rather not be on the ladder, that’s what we’re here for. Mountain View Pressure Washing And Softwash is licensed & insured.

Gutter and downspout cleaning FAQ

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Vancouver, WA?

Our pricing page lists gutter cleaning starting at $225. Your exact price depends on the size of the house, the number of stories, how full the gutters are and whether you add a full downspout flush. You’ll get a free estimate before any work starts.

Do you clean the downspouts too?

Regular gutter cleaning clears debris from the gutter outlets that feed the downspouts. A full downspout flush is not included. It’s an add-on service that may cost extra, so ask about it at your estimate.

What do you do with the debris?

It goes into your yard waste bin if you have one and there’s room. Otherwise it’s left neatly at the edge of your property. Bagging and hauling away aren’t included.

How do I know if my downspout is clogged?

Watch it during a rain. If the gutter is overflowing but little or no water is coming out the bottom of the downspout, or water is spilling near one corner of the house, the downspout is likely plugged.

Do I need to be home?

No, you don’t need to be home. We just need access to the gutters around the house.

When is the best time to schedule?

Fall matters most in Clark County. See when to clean your gutters in Clark County for the full timing guide.

When to Clean Your Gutters in Clark County (and Why Fall Matters Most)

If you live in Vancouver, Camas, Battle Ground, Ridgefield, Washougal or La Center, you know what fall looks like from your driveway: wet leaves on the lawn, fir needles on the walkway and a little more green on the roof each week. A lot of that ends up in your gutters.

Ready to book? See our gutter cleaning service page for what is included.

Gutters are easy to forget because you can’t see inside them from the ground. Usually you only notice there’s a problem when water starts spilling over the edge during the first big rain.

Here’s when to clean your gutters in Clark County, why they fill up so fast this time of year, and what a professional gutter cleaning involves.

The short answer: October through December

In Southwest Washington, most of the debris that clogs gutters comes down in fall. Leaves drop, wind and storms knock needles loose, and the rainy season starts up again.

That makes October through December the window that matters most:

  • Early fall (October): The leaves start coming down. If you clean now, the gutters are clear before the heavy rains start.
  • Late fall (November–December): Most trees are bare by now. A cleaning at this point catches everything that fell this season before winter.

Homes under a lot of trees, especially tall firs and cedars, may need more than one cleaning a season. A house with only a few trees nearby might be fine with one.

Why gutters get so nasty this time of year

Fir and cedar needles

Clark County is full of Douglas firs and cedars, and they shed all year long. Needles are small enough to slip past many gutter guards. Once they get wet, they mat down into a dense layer that slows water down and catches everything else that falls on top of it.

Moss runoff from the roof

Our long, wet season gives moss plenty of time to grow on shingle roofs. As moss dries out, breaks loose or gets knocked off by rain, it washes down the roof and into the gutters. On our Battle Ground roof moss job, brushing the moss off sent a lot of it into the gutters, so we cleaned the gutters before we left. If your roof has moss, your gutters are probably catching some of it.

Leaves

Maples, oaks and other deciduous trees drop most of their leaves in a few weeks. Wet leaves pile up quickly, especially at corners and over downspout openings, which is where clogs tend to start.

Put these together and you get a heavy, soggy sludge sitting in the gutter right as the rainy season begins.

What happens if you ignore them

A clogged gutter can’t do its job, which is to carry roof water away from your house. When the water has nowhere to go, it causes problems:

  • Water damage: Water spills over the edge or backs up behind the gutter. That can soak fascia boards and roof edges, and the water can run down siding it was supposed to be kept away from.
  • Foundation issues: Gutters and downspouts are meant to move water away from the base of the house. When they overflow, water lands right next to the foundation, where it can pool, wear away soil and work its way toward crawl spaces and basements.
  • Ice dams: On colder nights, standing water and wet debris in a clogged gutter can freeze. Ice along the roof edge can hold meltwater back and push it up under the shingles. We don’t get as much ice as colder parts of the state, but a freezing snap on full gutters is a bad combination.
  • Heavy, sagging gutters: Wet needles, moss and leaves are heavy. Over time, that weight can pull gutters loose from the house.
  • Moss and plants growing in the gutter: Debris that stays wet long enough can start growing on its own.

Overflowing gutters: how water gets under your roof

Overflowing gutters in Clark County cause more than a messy splash by the front door. Gutter overflow damage often starts where you can’t see it, right at the roof edge.

When a gutter is packed with needles and moss, rain backs up instead of draining. That water sits against the edge of the roof and can wick up under the shingles and drip edge, then into the roof sheeting, the wood decking your shingles are nailed to. Roof sheeting water damage happens slowly. Every storm soaks the same spot again, and in our wet season it never fully dries out.

Mold, mildew and dry rot

Wet wood that stays wet is where trouble grows:

  • Mold and mildew: Damp sheeting, fascia and soffits are an easy place for mold and mildew to take hold. It can spread into the attic, where it’s hard to spot until it’s a bigger problem.
  • Dry rot: Despite the name, dry rot starts with moisture. Wood that keeps getting soaked from an overflowing gutter softens and breaks down over time. Rotted sheeting and fascia have to be cut out and replaced, which costs far more than a gutter cleaning.

That’s why it’s critical to keep your gutters clean, especially before the heavy fall and winter rains. A clean gutter carries water off the roof and away from the house, so the sheeting underneath stays dry.

If you’ve seen water spilling over your gutters during a rainstorm, don’t wait. Call Mountain View Pressure Washing And Softwash at (360) 852-5589 for a free estimate on gutter cleaning in Vancouver, WA or anywhere in Clark County.

Gutter cleaning FAQ

How often should gutters be cleaned in Clark County?

Most homes need a cleaning at least once a year, and fall is the most important time. Homes under firs, cedars or big leafy trees may need it more often.

Is it too late to clean my gutters in December?

No. Cleaning in late fall clears out everything that came down this season before the coldest, wettest part of winter.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters?

Not always. Fir and cedar needles and broken-up moss can get past some guards or pile up on top of them, so it’s still a good idea to check them.

How can I tell if my gutters are clogged?

Look for water spilling over the edge during rain, downspouts that barely drip, gutters that sag, or plants growing along the roof line.

Why does my roof’s moss matter for my gutters?

Moss that breaks loose washes into the gutters and helps clog them. Taking care of the roof moss means less buildup in the gutters. Read how we soft washed moss off a 20-year-old roof in Battle Ground, WA.

Can you clean the gutters and the roof on the same visit?

Ask when you request your estimate. On the Battle Ground roof job, we cleaned the gutters after the moss came off.
