How We Cleared Moss Off a Shaded Concrete Walkway in Vancouver, WA
If you live in Vancouver, you have probably got a walkway that never quite dries out. Shade from the house, hedges, and firs keeps it damp, and by spring the edges turn green and dark.
If moss is also on your gutters or eaves, see our moss removal in Vancouver service.
That is what Dakota found on this side walkway in Vancouver, WA: exposed-aggregate concrete running along a brick wall, with moss packed into the edge against the foundation and the garden bed. Here is how the job went, with the photos he took on site.
What we found on the walkway

The walkway is exposed-aggregate concrete, the kind with small pebbles showing through the surface. Along the brick wall and the planting bed, moss had grown thick and dark. The rest of the path was stained and dull from the same organic buildup that thrives in Southwest Washington shade.
From the ground it can look like “just a little green.” Up close, it is a slick film and a sponge sitting on a path people use every day.
Why moss on a walkway is worth dealing with
Vancouver’s long wet season gives moss and algae months to settle into concrete. Walkways along the north side of a house, under hedges, or between a wall and a garden bed stay damp even between storms. That growth is the same stuff that makes driveways and steps slippery in the rain.
Concrete is tough enough for pressure washing, and that force is what lifts embedded dirt and moss out of the pores. Soft washing is the gentler approach we use on roofs and siding; for a walkway like this, pressure washing is the right tool. If you want the full comparison, we wrote a page on pressure washing vs. soft washing.
Our post on what really makes driveways slippery in Clark County covers the same moss and algae on flat concrete, and walkways get walked on just as much.
How we cleaned this walkway
Step 1: A free on-site estimate
Every job starts the same way. We come out, look at the surfaces, recommend soft washing or pressure washing, and give you a quote.
Step 2: Clearing the moss and staining

On this job you can see the difference in a single frame: dark, mossy concrete on one side of the line, and light aggregate on the other. That is the growth coming off the surface, not a coat of paint or a filter.
With a garden bed right along this path, protecting the plants matters. Dakota protects plants and landscaping by pre-wetting them before cleaning, rinsing them during the cleaning, and rinsing them again when the job is done.
Step 3: The after

Here is the same path after cleaning. The moss along the brick and the garden edge is gone, and the pebbles in the aggregate show through again. The surface is wet in the photo because the work had just finished.
Concrete cleaning will not change the weather. In a shady spot, growth can come back over time. Keeping needles and leaves cleared off the path and making sure downspouts are not dumping water onto it both help. If the gutters above are clogged, that overflow often soaks the walkway below. Walkway cleaning FAQ
Will pressure washing damage my concrete?
Too much pressure or the wrong technique can etch concrete. Used correctly, pressure washing lifts moss and algae without gouging the surface.
How often should a shady walkway be cleaned?
It depends on shade, trees, and drainage. Paths that stay damp under hedges or on the north side of a house usually need it more often than sunny, open ones. Ask during your estimate.
Do you clean driveways and steps on the same visit?
Ask when you request your estimate. Driveways, steps, and walkways grow the same moss and algae, and they can be just as slippery.
Is this the same as soft washing?
No. Soft washing is low pressure with a cleaning solution, and it is what we use on roofs and siding. Concrete walkways are cleaned with pressure washing so the growth can be lifted out of the surface.
What about the plants next to my walkway?
Dakota protects plants and landscaping by pre-wetting them before cleaning, rinsing them during the cleaning, and rinsing them again after the job is done.
Ready to get the moss off your walkway?
If your walkway is starting to look like the “before” photo, we would be happy to come take a look. Estimates are free and on-site: we will look at the path, recommend the right method, and give you a quote.
