What Are Tannin Stains?

Tannins are natural compounds in leaves, needles, bark and other plant material. When wet leaves sit on concrete or other masonry, the tannins leach out and soak into the surface, leaving brown or dark gray marks, often in the exact shape of the leaf. Piles of wet debris, fir needles and acorns can leave the same kind of stain.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, fall is tannin season. Leaves come down just as the rain starts, and they can sit on a driveway or patio for weeks. Shaded surfaces under maples, oaks and evergreens get hit the hardest.

Why Pressure Washing Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Concrete, pavers, brick and stone are porous. Tannin stains aren’t sitting on top like dirt or moss; they’ve soaked into the pores. Pressure washing cleans the surface well, but it can leave the leaf shapes behind, and blasting one spot harder can etch or stripe the surface without fixing the stain.

Tannin stains usually need a treatment made for organic stains, applied and given time to work before the surface is rinsed. We clean the whole area as well, so the treated spots blend in with the rest instead of looking patchy.

Most tannin stains come out or lighten a lot. Older, deeper stains may take more than one treatment and may not disappear completely. We’ll look at the surface and tell you what to expect before we start.

Know the Signs

What Tannin Stains Look Like

Tannin stains show up as brown or gray leaf shapes and blotches, usually where leaves or wet debris sat for a while. Lighter marks build up a little more every fall.

To slow them down:

  • Blow or sweep leaves off concrete and pavers often during fall instead of letting them pile up.
  • Clear wet debris from patios and the corners of steps and walkways.
  • Clean hard surfaces once a year, often in spring after the wet season, before stains have years to set in.

Tannin Stain Removal: Questions

What causes brown leaf stains on my concrete?

They’re tannin stains. Leaves, needles and other wet plant debris release natural tannins that soak into porous concrete and leave brown or dark marks, often in the shape of the leaf. They’re most common in fall here in Clark County, when leaves come down with the rain.

Can pressure washing remove tannin stains?

Not always. Tannins soak into the surface, so pressure alone can leave the leaf shapes behind, and spraying harder can etch the concrete. Tannin stains usually need a treatment made for organic stains that’s given time to work before the surface is rinsed.

What surfaces do you remove tannin stains from?

Concrete driveways, sidewalks, walkways, patios and steps, plus pavers, brick and stone. We’ll look at the surface at the estimate and tell you what to expect.

Will the tannin stains come out completely?

Most tannin stains come out or lighten a lot. Older or deeper stains may need more than one treatment and may not disappear completely. We’ll tell you what to expect before we start.

Can tannin stain removal be done when you clean my driveway?

Yes. Tannin stain removal can be done along with a driveway, sidewalk or patio cleaning, so the whole surface is cleaned and the stains are treated in the same visit.

How can I keep tannin stains from coming back?

Blow or sweep leaves off concrete and pavers often during fall, and don’t let wet debris pile up on patios, steps and walkways. A yearly cleaning, often in spring after the wet season, keeps stains from building up for years.
